KASPER INTRODUCES HIMSELF

Kasper Eriksen, 16, Aalborg, Denmark, is one of our two Rotary Youth Exchange students and attends classes at Starkville High School.Today, he will tell about his family and life in Denmark and what he hopes to gain from his experiences living and studying in our community.

NEXT WEEK: WATER

Rotary International's health programs emphasize water and sanitation where scarcity of clean water is increasingly serious. Next week, Bill Boyken of Greenville, chair of the District 6820 water project committee, will brief us on how the district’s 44 clubs are participating in this global effort.

LAST WEEK

Invocation and Pledge: Frank Chiles
Attendance: There were 118 members (34 exempt) present and 77 (16 exempt, 11 honorary) absent.
Guests and visitors: Anna Spivey was the guest of Scott Dodd. Guests of the Club were Troy DeRego of the Johnny Cash Festival, Francesca Scaravelli and Kasper Eriksen, Youth Exchange Students, Paul Sims, Starkville Daily News, and Tim Pratt, Starkville Dispatch.
Paul Harris Fellows: Four more Rotarians have been named PH Fellows. Steve Taylor, chair, and Robert Clark, past chair of the Annual Giving Committee, presented pins, medallions and certificates to Melanie Mitchell, Gerry Orgler, Tommy Tomlinson and Judy Webb.
Larry Mullins, assistant district governor, noted that the awards recognize a donation of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation. He explained that this fund is separate from Rotary International which, with our club and district, is funded by dues. The Foundation works to promote world health, wellbeing and peace.
Most recognizable of the Foundation efforts is the PolioPlus campaign to eradicate the disease worldwide. Rotarians are stepping up to meet a $200 million challenge to match the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s $355 million contribution.
Interact:  More than 20 young people, ages 14 to 18 years old, attended the Interact informational meeting on September 13. A number of others have expressed interest to Lynn Richardson, club co-sponsor. The organizational meeting will be next Sunday afternoon at Cadence Bank.
M&M’s: Club members responded well with suggested potential new members at the table brainstorming sessions. The Membership Development Committee appreciates your willingness to leave your comfort zone to help.

“3 DAYS TO CELEBRATE 1 NIGHT IN THE STARKVILLE CITY JAIL”

Despite economic pressures, the Third Annual Johnny Cash Flower Pickin’ Festival will happen in October.
Festival organizer Robbie Ward told the Club that two years of pardoning the late singer-songwriter for his inebriated flower picking escapade in 1965 was enough. This year, the Cash family will pardon Starkville.
“The festival, along with the country, has encountered a tough economic situation,” Ward said. “However, in tough times, we need a little music, a little redemption, a little distraction, so the event will go on.”
